Quando Utilizzare Le Espressioni After e Later

Dopo il quick article su before vs earlier non potevamo non analizzare la differenza tra after e later.
Vediamo un po’ la differenza tra queste due parti del discorso:

After

Può essere utilizzato come avverbio, preposizione, o congiunzione.
Con funzione di avverbio, ha il significato di “dopo, posteriormente”: e.g. “Next week the CEO is very busy and can’t meet with you, how about the week after?” (the following week)
Con funzione di preposizione, viene sempre usato con il significato di “dopo” in riferimento a qualcos’altro:

e.g. “You’ll have to reply to all of the emails after the meeting; we’re about to start. OR Make a left and you’ll see the supermarket right after the bank.”
Quando usato come congiunzione, after introduce non un singolo termine ma un’intera frase temporale: e.g. “Right after Tom had been fired, he received a call for a job offer.”

Later

Può essere usato come avverbio o aggettivo: Con funzione di avverbio significa “dopo, più tardi, più in là”: e.g. “There’s no snow in the mountains right now, but it should snow next week, so we can go skiing later in the season.”
Come aggettivo, significa “successivo, seguente”: “I’m so late for work, I think I’ll have to catch a later train this morning”.

N.B. Può anche assumere il significato di “recente” (e.g. Later versions of iPhones are of lower quality than the previous ones.)

Importante! Quando salutate qualcuno, si dice “see you later” non “see you after”.
